From pv magazine Germany A redox flow battery energy storage facility with an output of 500 MW will be built in Switzerland. The development was announced by the company Flexbase, which said the project is being built in Laufenburg, a town on the Rhine that lies partly in Switzerland and partly in Germany.
The building will serve as an operational hub. Opposite the hub, a new building will house the storage facility which FlexBase claims will be the largest redox flow battery in the world. The technology is designed to be sustainable, non-flammable, non-explosive, and recyclable, the company said.
The largest redox flow battery is currently located in China (commissioning in 2022: peak output 100MW, energy content 400MWh). The technology has a decisive advantage: it is neither flammable nor explosive, requires fewer to no rare and problematic materials and exhibits only very low power losses over time.
Laufenburg is the heart of and the oldest node in the European electricity grid. The location is unique with The electricity site enables a direct connection of the battery storage facility without detours and power losses and is therefore ideally suited as a location for the storage facility.
