The base stations, also known as gNBs (gNodeBs), are the radio access network (RAN) components that connect the UE to the core network. In a private 5G network, the base stations can be owned and operated by the organization or can be provided by a third-party vendor.
The architecture of a 5G private network consists of three main components: the user equipment (UE), the base stations, and the core network. The UE refers to the devices that are used to access the network, such as smartphones, tablets, or IoT devices.
In conjunction with 5G NR, private base stations (BS) can support connectivity for different spectrum bands (sub-GHz, 1 to 6 GHz, or mmWave). The 5G base station products must pass all of the test requirements prior to their release. Otherwise, the products are not 3GPP-compatible or appropriate to implement in a network.
UPF, 5GC CP, UDM, and MEC are deployed in the enterprise and physically separated from the public network. Only 5G base stations (gNBs) located within the enterprise are shared between private and public network (RAN Sharing).
The customisable Private 5G Box works similar to a public mobile network and can be accessed by inserting private sim cards into mobile sets. When set up, Private 5G Box provides network coverage up to 500 meters. It also allows users to make cross network calls.
Private networks are closed communication networks that are used by a single organization or group of organizations for specific purposes. Private 5G networks can be used by businesses and industries, and despite the potential benefits, the implementation of 5G private networks presents a range of technical challenges that need to be addressed.
