By configuration, Electric Double-Layer Capacitors led with 55.2% of the supercapacitors market share in 2024, while Hybrid Supercapacitors are projected to expand at an 18.1% CAGR through 2030. By form factor, modules commanded 57.8% share of the supercapacitors market in 2024, and packs are forecast to grow at 17.4% CAGR to 2030.
The structure–property–performance relationship of nickel-based supercapacitors is still obscure and further efforts are needed. It should be recognized that the intrinsic energy density of supercapacitors is relatively low, which arises from its inherent principle. There is still distance behind other energy storage devices.
The terminology of “supercapattery” is even used in some reports, . Hundreds of papers related to the nickel-based materials consider them as supercapacitor-type materials. Noteworthy, it is still under debate on the capacitive behavior of nickel-based materials.
Nickel-aluminum-based supercapacitors are primarily NiAl-layered double hydroxide. Layered double hydroxides (LDH), with the general formula of [M II1−x M IIIx (OH) 2] x+ [A n−] x/n and generally surrounded by hydroxyls, where M II and M III are divalent and trivalent cations and A is inorganic or organic anion, have grasped great attention.
Later several groups have synthesized nickel-based MOFs as supercapacitor electrode materials. The as-prepared materials inherited the well-defined porous structure and the large surface areas of MOFs. As a result, the derived materials possess interesting properties.
