By the end of 2023, China had completed and put into operation a cumulative installed capacity of new type energy storage projects reaching 31.4GW / 66.9GWh, with an average storage duration of 2.1 hours. The newly added installed capacity in 2023 was approximately 22.6GW / 48.7GWh, which is three times that for 2022 (7.3GW / 15.9GWh).
However, due to the absence of supporting policies for this function, the current utilization efficiency of energy storage is low. The shared model proposed in this paper can significantly improve the utilization efficiency and economic benefits of energy storage.
There are currently four major revenue models for energy storage: peak-to-valley price spread arbitrage, capacity compensation, capacity leasing and ancillary services.
In 2022, China's cumulative installed NTESS capacity exceeded 13.1 GW, with lithium-ion batteries accounting for 94% (equivalent to 28.7% of total global capacity). China is positioning energy storage as a core technology for achieving peak CO2 emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
According to NEA's Bian, the government has released a list of 56 new-type energy storage pilot demonstration projects since the beginning of this year, including 17 lithium-ion battery projects and 11 compressed air energy storage projects, among others.
