Solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation is the process of converting energy from the sun into electricity using solar panels. Solar panels, also called PV panels, are combined into arrays in a PV system. PV systems can also be installed in grid-connected or off-grid (stand-alone) configurations.
The IEA Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (IEA PVPS) is one of the TCP's within the IEA and was established in 1993. The mission of the programme is to “enhance the international collaborative efforts which facilitate the role of photovoltaic solar energy as a cornerstone in the transition to sustainable energy systems.”
2. LCA goal and scope definition The core of a photovoltaic plant is the solar cell converting the luminous energy into electricity by means of the photovoltaic effect, which consists in the generation of an electromotive force when the radiation reaches a semiconductor plate presenting a potential gap.
The photovoltaic (PV) sector has undergone both major expansion and evolution over the last decades, and currently, the technologies already marketed or still in the laboratory/research phase are numerous and very different.

The performance of a solar panel will vary, but in most cases, guaranteed power output life expectancy is between 10 years and 25 years. Solar panel power output is measured in watts.
