21.9 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) was installed in Europe in 2024, marking the eleventh consecutive year of record breaking-installations, and bringing Europe's total battery fleet to 61.1 GWh. However, the annual growth rate slowed down to 15% in 2024, after three consecutive years of doubling newly added capacity.
It can also facilitate the electrification of different economic sectors, notably buildings and transport. The main energy storage method in the EU is by far 'pumped hydro' storage, but battery storage projects are rising. A variety of new technologies to store energy are also rapidly developing and becoming increasingly market-competitive.
With adequate growth in electricity storage, demand side flexibility and cross-border interconnectivity to help take advantage of abundant home-grown clean power, the EU could reduce fossil dependance, avoid costly energy imports, and protect consumers and businesses from volatile international energy prices.
In other European countries, the affordability of electric cars saw little change. In the United Kingdom, for instance, the average price premium of battery electric SUVs made only slim progress, dropping to 30% in 2024 from 40% in 2021.
The recent electricity outage in the Iberian Peninsula is a stark reminder of why this is important.” The BESS market in Europe is set to grow faster in the next years, although not at the levels required. In the most-likely scenario for 2025, 29.7 GWh of battery storage will be installed in Europe, representing a 36% annual growth.

With solar energy mainstreaming across the continent, now is the time for European decisionmakers to put batteries at the centre of a flexible, electrified, energy system.
