The 100 MW power station was commissioned in 2014. It was Cambodia's first coal-fired power plant. Starting when it was first proposed in 2008, the plant faced strong opposition from local residents over its environmental and health effects. In February 2010, a financing agreement for units 1 and 2 was closed.
Coal was the fossil fuel that powered the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century and is still extensively used today in power generation and heavy industry due to its availability and low cost, as well as its role in certain industrial processes such as steelmaking.
There is tremendous demand in Cambodia for diesel generators as backup power, on-site power plants, and power generation in rural areas not served by public utilities.
Major sources of local power generation are hydro and coal, and minor sources include diesel, wood, and biomass. In addition to local power generation, Cambodia also buys electricity from neighboring countries, especially during the dry season.
