Abstract: Shipboard electrical power generation is generally for ship service power supported by emergency generators. In the case of a prime mover‐driven propulsion system, ship service electric power is generated by ship service generators. This chapter summarizes US and IEC shipboard power generation and distribution levels at 50 HZ and 60 HZ.
These systems are designed to replace a conventional diesel powertrain installed on board a container ship. The fuel consumption, according to the ship load profile, is calculated and the analysis on the masses and volumes of the fuel storage tanks and of the ammonia powertrain systems is performed.
Results, in terms of operating conditions and performances, have allowed to carry out a feasibility assessment related to the installation of the proposed powertrain systems on board vessel. The first goal of this study concerns the design and the modeling of two power generation systems for supplying a ship propulsion system.
The output power of the design system is only slightly lower than that of the SOFC–HCCI system and comparable to that of other systems. In terms of the ship energy efficiency index, the Required EEDI of the target ship is 8.415, and the EEDI of all systems is less than this value.
Electrical power in ships is usually produced by a synchronous generator. Given the essential nature of electrical power onboard ship, several means are used to assure its continuous availability. The main switchboard is divided into two or more sections.
