In this paper, a novel gravity energy storage system which features a linear electric machine-based hoisting mechanism is investigated. The storage system utilises the inherent ropeless operation of linear electric machines to vertically move multiple solid masses to store and discharge energy.
It is an integral part of the platform and as such has no geographic constraints. Storage scales naturally with PV electricity generation in units of about 25 MWh. The initial capital cost is about $125/kWh, which is better than any available or planned energy storage technology, and it will reduce in cost with volume production.
Mountain gravitational energy storage (MGES) is a system that stores energy by moving sand or gravel from the bottom of a mountain (lower storage site) to the top of the mountain (upper storage site). The system focuses on long-term energy storage with a lower power capacity of between 1 and 20 MW and is illustrated in Fig. 1 (e).
