The innovation of current article lies in the comprehensive and comparative analysis of different front-surface and back-surface cooling techniques for PV systems and CPVs, as well as the introduction of a new concept of cooling using hydrogel, a 3D porous network structure that can enhance photovoltaic energy conversion and storage.
This table presents research on forced convection cooling techniques applied to PV systems, revealing a variety of results, from maximizing thermal efficiency of approximately 87 % to enhancing electrical efficiency of 8–14 %. Several PV technologies have been studied, with the predominant PV size being 45Wp.
As test results show the efficiency of solar PV can have an increasing rate of 47% with the cooled condition, a cooling system is proposed for possible system setup of residential solar PV application.
For cooling such systems, thermoelectric technology is appropriate for its integration adjacent to the PV module. Thermoelectric module (TEM) is attached at the back side of the PV module for absorption of the heat generated in the PV module by the infrared spectrum.
For example, it was depicted that optical cooling techniques can enhance the performance of PV systems by up to 4.2% and the solar-to-heat conversion efficiency by up to 47%.
