By adding night functionality to solar systems, homeowners and businesses can maximize their energy independence and reduce costs. It also lowers the load on energy storage systems, helping reduce the need for expensive batteries. Imagine installing solar panels for home use that generate power both day and night.
The solar panels are operated under the sun, so the question arises: do the houses remain in the dark during the night when there is no sun, or do they save power for the night? Well, practically, solar panels do not generate power at night as the photovoltaic (PV) cells placed in solar panels should hold access to sunlight to generate electricity.
Functioning like a conventional solar panel during the day to consume the energy of the sun, the panel then “runs in reverse” to keep generating electricity at night. However, any clouds at night can hinder the system by reflecting the infrared radiation back to Earth.
This technology has already been implemented in several solar plants around the world, such as the Gemasolar solar plant in Spain, which has managed to generate electricity continuously for 24 hours thanks to its thermal storage system. While thermal storage is an effective option, it is not the only way to make solar energy available at night.
Although it's still being tested only on the university's rooftop, the system has already managed to generate around 50 MW per square meter of solar p anel. Their own researchers are optimistic, believing that energy output could potentially double under more favorable nighttime conditions.
