The test results demonstrate that high-power charging significantly impacts the durability and thermal safety of the high-capacity lithium batteries. In particular, the capacity fading rate can reach up to 30% only after 100 charge cycles depending on the battery type.
This creates gaps in power generation that must be filled to maintain a stable electrical grid. The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has emerged as an adaptable and scalable solution to this challenge. Recent BESS-related fires and explosions have highlighted the potential harm to people and the environment.
This is generally true when the batteries approach a high state of charge (SOC) when charging and or a low SOC when discharging. This phenomenon may also be amplified with battery degradation. In other words, additional heat may be generated towards the end of the lifetime of the battery cell.
Further, the migration characteristics of the temperature threshold of battery thermal runaway are investigated using the proposed procedure. The test results demonstrate that high-power charging significantly impacts the durability and thermal safety of the high-capacity lithium batteries.
To reduce the safety risk associated with large battery systems, it is imperative to consider and test the safety at all levels, from the cell level through module and battery level and all the way to the system level, to ensure that all the safety controls of the system work as expected.
