This paper presents a review on the state-of-the-art electric vehicle charging technologies i.e., fast, super-fast, and ultra-super-fast charging stations that are under development. These have the potential to cause power quality issues such as charging transients, rapid voltage fluctuations, and harmonics in the power grids.
This paper also investigates the impacts of random and fluctuating EV fast-charging loads on the electric power grids, mainly considering the random connection of EVs to the power grids through DC fast-charging stations as the principal source of fluctuating EV loads.
With the development of new energy grid integration technologies and the reduction of the production cost of electric vehicles, the ownership of electric vehicles has increased dramatically, at the same time, the charging and discharging process of electric vehicles will bring a series of impacts on the stability of the power grid.
The results showed that the input power factor decreased with the increase in the number of charging stations connected to the power system. Furthermore, the THD levels increased with the increase in the number of charging stations .
Moreover, unstable charging can also cause a rise in THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) which can cause severe impacts on the distribution system. The potential power quality and power delivery concerns of unstable chargers have also affected customer satisfaction with EV charging techniques .
The findings indicated that fluctuating EV battery loads could significantly increase the percentage voltage drop and max demand, resulting in a more notable impact on the power grids. Furthermore, it was noted that there is an increase in maximum demand when fluctuating EV loads are linked to a charging station with a battery SOC below 80 %.
