Developers are increasingly building solar PV and battery systems as one integrated plant, capturing synergies in construction, grid connection, and operation. This is further cementing the market sentiment for this new setup ushering the era of battery storage integrated solar power systems.
In the past three months, the International Energy Agency, the International Renewable Energy Agency, and BloombergNEF published preliminary data for the power sector in 2024. These data hammer the same powerful message: solar photovoltaic (PV) has become the new cornerstone of the global power sector.
Crucially, adding storage to solar dramatically enhances the value of solar energy. A recent modeling study of a 300 MW solar plant in South Australia found that including an equal-sized battery (300 MW with 2 hours storage) would increase the energy exported to the grid by 33 percent, and boost project revenues by an astonishing 170 percent.
One effective solution is the use of battery storage. Given the exponential growth in PV generation over the past years and its expected continued growth, this article examines the optimal level of battery storage required to balance this growth in a cost-efficient way.
This would be a milestone for the integration of RE into power system operations, as battery storage is ideal to complement solar PV production profile and provide a reliable power supply. As for leading countries in 2024, China was predicted to lead battery storage capacity additions with 36.1 GW (Chart 7).
In all areas: electricity generation growth, installed capacity growth, and cost competitiveness, solar PV domination is now overwhelming. And solar PV takeover is accompanied by the timely meteoric rise of battery storage, which cumulative installed capacity likely overtook that of pumped hydro storage last year.
