Indonesia is the region's largest energy consumer, followed by Thailand and Malaysia. Vietnam's energy use is also fast increasing, overtaking Singapore in 2019.
Southeast Asia's energy demand surge is fueled by robust economic expansion and increasing urbanization. The report highlights that countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam are experiencing unprecedented industrial growth.
Concurrently, coal-fired power has remained a significant component of Southeast Asia's energy mix. Investment in coal plants has risen steadily throughout the past 20 years, reaching 121 GW of installed capacity in 2025.
Between 2010 and 2035, the area will account for over 25% of global energy demand growth, a significant jump from its 11% share between 2010 and 2020. This rise in energy consumption is underpinned by Southeast Asia's role as a global industrial hub and its growing population.
In terms of renewables, hydropower still dominates the regional energy landscape at 63% of renewable energy sources, while solar and wind energy contributed only 9% to the ASEAN energy mix in 2029 (ASEAN Center for Energy, 2021).
However, fossil fuel investment decreased from USD 70 billion in 2015 to USD 50 billion in 2025 while clean energy investment reached USD 47 billion, up from 30 billion in 2015. Given the challenges of accessing international capital markets, Southeast Asia's capital markets have relied on domestic commercial lending.
