The LM-complementarity between wind and solar power is superior to that between wind or solar power generated in different regions. The hourly load demand can be effectively met by the LM-complementarity between wind and solar power.
The complementary development of wind and photovoltaic energy can enhance the integration of variable renewables into the future energy structure. It can be employed as a unified solution to address the discrepancy between the supply and demand of power within the power system .
Monforti et al. assessed the complementarity between wind and solar resources in Italy through Pearson correlation analysis and found that their complementarity can favourably support their integration into the energy system. Jurasz et al. simulated the operation of wind-solar HES for 86 locations in Poland.
To this end, we propose a novel variation-based complementarity metrics system based on the description of series' fluctuation characteristics from quantitative and contoured dimensions. From this, the complementarity between wind and solar resources in China is assessed, and the trend and persistence are tested.
At the hourly scale, the complementarity of wind energy and solar energy shows an increasing trend from east to west, with Qinghai, Yunnan and Xinjiang exhibiting the most pronounced complementarity.
